The Brewer's Son
James Prescott Joule was born in Salford, England, in 1818, into a family that made beer. He was taught largely at home, and he grew up around vats, thermometers and the habit of measuring things carefully.
While running the family brewery he did his science in the spare hours, with thermometers so fine they could read a fraction of a degree. Most of his neighbours saw a brewer. He saw a laboratory with a chimney.
